Title Splitting/Absence Year 2026 Client New Latin Wave Category Interactive Installation

We designed an interactive system for the presentation of the opera Splitting/Absence by Chilean musician Sokio at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM) in Santiago. The design process sought to create a dialogue with the work of Chilean-American artist and architect Gordon Matta-Clark, who, through manual cuts into the walls and floors of abandoned houses and buildings, revealed intimate spaces from the public sphere, and vice versa.

Through the installation, attendees were invited to become part of Matta-Clark's work through a sectioned representation of their image. Functioning as an interactive mirror driven by a Canon camera, the system captured live video of each viewer and fragmented it using shapes and colors that echo the aesthetic of both Matta-Clark and Splitting/Absence.
